Welcome, Diana Bettinson…
Hello. Lovely to see you
Can I offer you a drink? Tea? Wine? Beer
A nice cold white wine would be lovely
*Hands a cold white wine to Diana*
Can you tell me a little about yourself? (inc if you use a pen name and why)
Most of my working life was with the Citizen’s Advice Bureau firstly as a debt counselor and later as a welfare rights worker mainly for cancer patients. I have always jotted down the odd poem and knew I had a story or two in me.
What is the title and genre of your book?
GARI is aimed at the older child but adults seem to be my main audience the life story of a mini cooper.
Do you write in first or third person? Please explain why
Partly the book is in first person as the car is telling his story but things that go around him are in the third person.
How did you come up with the story?
The idea was boiling in the back of my head for several years and for 50p I bought an old workshop manual at a fete which gave me a lot of background information. My husband is a mechanic so gained some information from him and Gari grew from those small seeds.
It has a lovely cover, did you have any say in what you wanted the cover to be?
Yes I did and I love the cover. Hope the readers do too.
Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?
Just keep writing and reading. Whatever takes your fancy. We all have stories in us.
What is your writing routine?
Not so much of a routine but I find it all consuming when I feel a story coming together and become single minded about it.
Do you have an editing process?
I guess I do as I read, re-read, read out loud and edit from those processes. I also have other people read and give me constructive criticism which is very useful.
What do you enjoy the most/least about writing?
When the words are flowing and the ideas are popping up I love to just sit and write. Sifting the waffle out and moulding the story is fun as well and meeting such lovely people in the writing group is a bonus. But when a story grinds to a halt for some reason that is the bit I hate.
Where can people find you on the internet?
Is there anything else you would like to share with your readers?
Just thank you to all those who have followed me and supported me. Keep up the good work
I am appearing at the East Anglian Festival of Culture at the Hatfield Hotel in Lowestoft on Sat 9th Sept and would love see my readers there.
Thank you for a lovely interview.
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule.
